Review & Description

Microbiorobotics is a new engineering discipline that inherently involves a multidisciplinary approach (mechanical engineering, cellular biology, mathematical modeling, control systems, synthetic biology, etc). Building robotics system in the micro scale is an engineering task that has resulted in many important applications, ranging from micromanufacturing techniques to cellular manipulation. However, it is also a very challenging engineering task. One of the reasons is because many engineering ideas and principles that are used in larger scales do not scale well to the micro-scale. For example, locomotion principles in a fluid do not function in the same way, and the use of rotational motors is impractical because of the difficulty of building of the required components.

  • Microrobotics is an area that is acknowledged to have massive potential in applications from medicine to manufacturing. This book introduces an inter-disciplinary readership to the toolkit that micro-organisms offer to micro-engineering.
  • The design of robots, sensors and actuators faces a range of techology challenges at the micro-scale. This book shows how biological techniques and materials can be used to meet these challenges.
  • World-class multi-disciplanry editors and contributors leverage insights from engineering, mathematical modeling and the life sciences - creating a novel toolkit for microrobotics.

Review & Description

In 1900, for every 1,000 babies born in the United States, 100 would die before their first birthday, often due to infectious diseases. Today, vaccines exist for many viral and bacterial diseases. The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, passed in 1986, was intended to bolster vaccine research and development through the federal coordination of vaccine initiatives and to provide relief to vaccine manufacturers facing financial burdens. The legislation also intended to address concerns about the safety of vaccines by instituting a compensation program, setting up a passive surveillance system for vaccine adverse events, and by providing information to consumers. A key component of the legislation required the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to collaborate with the Institute of Medicine to assess concerns about the safety of vaccines and potential adverse events, especially in children.

Adverse Effects of Vaccines reviews the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence regarding adverse health events associated with specific vaccines covered by the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), including the varicella zoster vaccine, influenza vaccines, the hepatitis B vaccine, and the human papillomavirus vaccine, among others. For each possible adverse event, the report reviews peer-reviewed primary studies, summarizes their findings, and evaluates the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence. It finds that while no vaccine is 100 percent safe, very few adverse events are shown to be caused by vaccines. In addition, the evidence shows that vaccines do not cause several conditions. For example, the MMR vaccine is not associated with autism or childhood diabetes. Also, the DTaP vaccine is not associated with diabetes and the influenza vaccine given as a shot does not exacerbate asthma.

Adverse Effects of Vaccines will be of special interest to the National Vaccine Program Office, the VICP, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vaccine safety researchers and manufacturers, parents, caregivers, and health professionals in the private and public sectors.

Quick Guide to Hematology Testing

Quick Guide
Quick Guide to Hematology Testing
by Vishnu Reddy, Marisa B. Marques, George A. Fritsma

Buy new: $20.00
7 used & new from $20.00

(Visit the Most Gifted in Medical Technology list for authoritative information on this product's current rank.)

Review & Description

The Quick Guide to Hematology Testing is a speedy reference for anyone who orders, performs, or interprets hematology laboratory tests including complete blood counts, bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow film examinations, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular techniques. Clear understanding of the significance of hematology laboratory results is critical and awareness of the effect of confounding factors leads to clinically sound interpretations.

The Guide's pocket size provides immediate access at the time and location tests are ordered, performed, and interpreted. The text includes the most common anemias and leukemias, to emphasize their laboratory evaluation, treatment, and follow-up. Diseases and their assays are described together, so that all conditions may be correlated when a laboratory workup is warranted.

Although the Guide reviews clinical conditions, it should never be used as single source for differential diagnosis of patients; instead, many current references are provided for further reading. The authors' local experience suggests that the Guide is a useful resource for medical professionals. They hope you will find it valuable, too!

93 used & new from $37.00

Review & Description

The Second Edition of Pathophysiology offers a unique clinical approach that facilitates learning by viewing pathophysiology as health care professionals do. Whereas a traditional systems-based approach impractically isolates diseases to a single body system, this textbook's approach recognizes how disease affects multiple systems. Additionally, rather than covering only a limited number of diseases, aiming for rote memorization of the key factors in those diseases, the clinical approach details the mechanisms of disease. By mastering the core concepts of altered human function, students can apply a deeper understanding to a host of diseases, rather than trying to memorize facts about specific conditions. Because students learn through application, they learn to think about pathophysiology the way they will need to in a clinical setting, by working from symptoms to the cause, rather than the other way around. Each chapter discusses clinical models, enhancing the real-world application of the material.
